I'm interested in traveling to Central Asia (silk road, the trace of Muslim traders, stuff like that...)
Which country is best to travel to in terms of these qualities?
a) safety (less violent crime, free from terrorism & civil war stuff)
b) hygiene (clean public bathrooms, hotels, drinkable water)
c) magnificent architecture and historical sites
d) beautiful nature and exotic scenery
e) tourist-friendly (English speaking local people, guides or other tourists)
My candidates are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
You may choose the one best country or rank all of them in order :)
I live in Uzbekistan but I will try to give you as objective information as I can.
1. To be honest, in accordance with what you want to see, Uzbekistan is the most suitable of all countries mentioned. Kazakhstan is a country of steppes not of monuments, Kyrgyzstan has beatiful landscapes but again no monuments worth seeing. Tajikistan is the poorest country in the region so were I you I would not go there at all. I do not know anything relating the monument side of Turkmenistan but I know that regime there is sort of Orwell described in 1984 and Big Brother will not leave you.
2. There are no civil wars in the countries you mentioned. The risk of terrorism...I do not know a country where there would not be such a risk. But, at least in Uzbekistan all is quiet, thanks God. The same in all other countries.
3. Hygiene...that is the most difficult side. The water is drinkable only in the capital, Tashkent. In other cities, though the situation is not as terrible as in India, it is not recommended to drink tap water for your own sake. Clean public bathrooms...to be honest, I think that is a dream )))) that someday will come true [but you are travelling to get something new and having everithing identical with your country will spoil the fun] but I think that in tourist towns you will manage to find one suitable.
4. magnificent architecture and historical sites are all yours if you pay money ) simple but true.
5. English speaking local people is a dream! But so wonderful. In tourist towns people know as much language as they need. I mean if one is a driver then he will understand where you want to go and how much you pay. other tourists...well mainly those are from France (aged ones especially).
