What are some books about Austin History / Culture?
Not Lonely Planet or any 'travel guides' but real history or cultural history or cultural guides.
Know of any?
I heard Waterloo was supposed to be a good introduction to Austin politics.
There's a really excellent photographic history called "Austin-Then and Now", by William Dylan Powell. It's available at Book People here, or of course on Amazon.com. Powell found some historical photos at various spots in the city, and then went to those locations to take a photo of what it looks like today.
If you are in Austin, you should definitely check out the Austin History Center, which is the repository for many of the historical pictures Powell uses in his book.
