"Not without my travelguide",that´s often the first thought of tourists before a holiday. Lots of travelers prefer to use the helpful travel guides to be sure to visit the most important sights. This is especially important these days as city trips are becoming more and more popular.
These tourists don´t have enough time to see all the attractions but they want to see as much as possible in a small time.

Travel guides have a long tradition. In the past explorers such as the famous Venecian Marco Polo wrote notes about their experiences. The invention of the letterpress at the same time as the discovery of America or new expeditions in far flung countries made the quantity of travel literature rise dramaticly. Since the commercial benefits of the Industrial Revolution, more and more wealthy people and business owners travelled more and wrote about their expierences. Another boom of travel literature was in the 18 th centuary when the improvement of infrastructure made traveling more easier.
Throughout history travel guides have changed - they are not only avaible in printed form • • " like books • • " but also as newspapers, magazines, webpages and even travel guide games.
The variety has expanded. More and more people print the information from the Web. Travel guides won´t be out of fashion because it is a long lived tradition to take them with you. It belongs in your travel luggage like travel documents or the rain coat. The travelers of the 21 st centuary are as diferent as the variety of travel guides.

There are people who prefer to go on Weekend City Trips for whom it is essential to see the most important sights in a short time. Others prefer longer holidays and want to see things away from the typical tourist roudes. Backpack tourists often travel on a low budget and want to expierence the travel destination in a different way to "typical" tourists. Others prefer luxurious travels, others authentic...the most important thing when considering the choice of travel guides is first to choose the right medium. If you don´t like to search all the travel information on the internet you won´t be happy with e-information, but more with books or magazines.

There are well recommended travel guide companies but sometimes it is more useful to try the more independent ones. Some travel guides include next to the tips for eating and drinking other useful information on a destination. It is important for the traveler to feel well guided by his travel help.Illustrations in the published product are also extremely important. Too much text can be boring for the tourist but with nice pictures and some funny annectodes travel guides can be a fun adventure for the whole family.

A tip for students, Travel Guides don´t have to be very expensive. Just go to your next libary and you will see lots of different ones. Take your time to choose the most suitable one for you. I still think that travel guides are useful for tourists and can help them to creat unforgetable holidays. They can often help you see many things next to the ´big´ attractions. So take it with you and have fun on the next long holidays, or just weekend or conference whatever.
