Have you travelled to Thailand?
This would be my first time visiting Thailand and so I would really love to get some ideas, advice, tips from you if you have travelled to Thailand. Here are my questions...
1) I like to see museums, temples, markets and old arhictecture so please recommend me a few of each to visit.
2) When's the best time to visit Thailand? Which months? And why?
3) What must I take precaution during my visit there?
4) Recommend me some nice and cheap place to stay.
5) How many days should I spend on Bangkok alone? And besides Bangkok, where else is nice to visit?
6) Is it safe to leave your belongings in the hotel/hostel/guest room while you're travelling outside?
P/S: I have bought the Lonely Planet Travelbook on Thailand.
1) i would not plan very many of these places, as you can often find the best ones when you're just walking along the streets. If you want to see the history, it really depends on each island, but there are a lot of great places in Phuket and Bankok.
2) The rainy season gets a lot of rain, but it rains HARD in short periods. You can enjoy an entire day on the beach, and have only about 15-30 minutes of really hard rain each day. I was out on the beach for probably 8 hrs a day, no problem.
I'm going there again, and am purposefully going during the rainy season because of the lower prices, and less people. Most people try not to go during the rainy season (i guess cuz it sounds yucky), so hotels often give you deals, and everything is a bit cheaper. There are also less problems with finding hotels, as most of them are empty. The streets are less busy, and you can easily get more of the 'real thaiand' if you go during the rainy season.
The weather is still great -- it's still really hot, so you can just duck into a resteraunt or cofee shop when it rains, and dry off in litterally a couple of minutes as soon as the rain stops.
The rainy season changes depending on where you go, but its ussually around June-September
3) Just check with any health nurse -- they can tell you exactly what you need (and dont chinse out -- its better safe than sorry)
4) When i was there, I just booked a hotel for the first night on an island, then walked up and down the beach to find some nice, cheap hotels. it really depends what your looking for, and how much ur willing to spend
5) depending on what you want you may love bangkok, or you may hate it. personally, i didnt enjoy it very much, and would recomend you stay only 2-5 days (i thought it wasn't very cultural, it was a lot more expencive, and didnt have as nice of beaches. but if ur looking to do lots of shopping, and partying bangkok is for you)
Phuket is also a 'tourist attraction' and can be fun, depending on what you want. although its really nice to get adjusted, its not the 'real' thailand, its not as much fun, its pretty busy, and its more expensive -- only spend a week or so there, cuz u'll want to spend all your time in KohSamui and KoPhiPhi -- the best islands out there!!! they both have awsome beaches, really friendly peple, and are just absolutely great!!!
6) that depends all on the hotel -- if ur at a 4 or 5 star hotel, there are no problems, but otherwise its questionable. although 99% of the people on the islands are friendly, hospital people, there are the few that are criminal-escapees, so i would take any expensive/important things around with you (camera, visa, passport, etc). it also depends on the island -- if ur in a 'tourist place', there are often more people around, and it is ussually safer.
hope all this helps!!! have a great holiday -- oh, and if you go to KohPhiPhi be sure to ask for 'thai pancakes'
:D
