Majorca Travel Guide

A Tourist's Guide to Menorca

Menorca is the second largest Balearic Island, after Majorca.  It is mainly popular for its abundance of beaches and low cost all inclusive family holidays.  It is very family friendly and far more quiet and calm than Mallorca, making it more popular with those who have young children.  This also means there is less of a drinking culture amongst the tourists who visit Menorca.

Best Time to Travel to Menorca

Menorca has a very pleasant climate, although the tramontana makes it very windy.  The windiest month is said to be March.  The best time to visit for a summer holiday are July and August, when the days are longest and you can enjoy the most sunshine.  October is the rainiest month and hence perhaps not the best month for a visit to Menorca.

 Attractions to See in Menorca

Menorca truly offers something to cater to all tastes.  For example:

Menorca harbors, where you can see the fishing boats in Arabic design.  It is also possible to take hour long organized harbor trips.

Es Freginal Park, which is a lovely park and outdoor area, ideal for picnics with the family.  Most of the cultural and music events of Menorca take place in El Freginal Park.

Xoriguer Distillery where Menorca's gin is distilled.  Of course, it is possible to not only purchase but also sample the gin as well as other alcoholic beverages at the distillery.

There are also many churches and cathedrals that you can visit as well as many museums.

 Restaurants and Bars in Menorca

Menorca offers some fantastic food, particularly since it grows most of its own vegetables.   You can enjoy traditional food in Menorca, including sea food and cheese.  The most famous vegetable of Menorca is the aubergine and you will find many dishes incorporating this vegetable in their recipes.  Olives and dried peppers also feature in Menorca's local cuisine.

Nightlife in Menorca is vibrant and interesting.  There are typically English nightclubs with a contemporary feel, piano bars for calm and quiet evenings as well as regular bars.  One of the interesting things about bars in Menorca is that closing time is when the last customer leaves.  This is also one of the reasons why most nightclubs don't open until much later in the evening.

 Transport in Menorca

If you are planning a visit to Menorca, hiring a car could be a great way to give yourself the freedom to see the full beauty of the island at your own pace.  There are many car hire companies available on Menorca, such as Poppy Car, Holiday Autos, Don Cars, Alquiler Moches, Hiper Rent a Car, Auto Europe and Autos Valls.  Because competition is fierce, hiring a car can be very cheap indeed.

So, if you are looking for a sun kissed family holiday, where you can not only lie on the beach and relax, but also enjoy many of the historically significant sights, as well as enjoying some truly amazing cuisine, particularly sea foods, Menorca is the place for you.

Mallorca (Majorca) suggestions!?

I will be in Majorca for 3 days and am wondering where I should stay and what I should see. I am 20, so I don't think I can rent a car because you have to be 21 to rent a car in Spain. So that means I would have to rely on public transportation. Is it easy to get around Majorca without a car? Where should I stay to make traveling easy? I was thinking about staying in Alcudia because I hear it is beautiful. Can I take buses from Alcudia to other places? Any suggestions about Majorca would be wonderful. Since I will only be there for 3 days I will have to pick and choose what to see. Are the caves worth seeing over the cap de formentor? Are there any guided tours that would make traveling around the island a bit easier?

hiya
i have been to Alcudia many summers when I was young and a few more a few years ago, i have some family there...
I would recommend it since it is not as crazy as some other places in mallorca, but face it, if you go at summer time it is going to be very busy... best time to go is june or july or september.... never august time
caves wise.... there are a few and they are all nice http://www.mca-hotels.com/holidays-guide-mallorca/7/24/51/mallorca/attractions/caves/
i have been to all, but probably the most peculiar one is coves drac since you get on a rowing boat to get out the cave....http://www.worldtravelguide.net/attraction/79/attraction_guide/Europe/Caves-of-Drach-Cuevas-del-Drach.html
night life is all right
beaches are wonderful and there are many activities to choose from
without a car you are a bit limited, but you can check the public transport on the links below... i don't know cos i was driven or i drove when i was there...
easy to get to palma for a day out
you can take the soler train.... http://www.sollernet.com/trendesoller/en1.html
it is nice
go inland too, mallorca is not only coastline... http://www.allaboutmallorca.com/Mallorca-inland-drives.html
renting a bike is a good option.... it is damn flat ..... easy and enjoyable
