Traveling to France, Italy, and Germany?
A couple of friends and I are planning to travel to Europe together after our graduation from college. We are planning to visit France, Italy, and Germany. Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do there or places to visit. Touristy places and non-touristy places would be great. Any places to stay that would fit in a college graduate's budget would be awesome as well! We also wanted to spice it up a bit and do sort of a "scavenger hunt" thing.
We've been looking in guides, maps, anything online but getting some personal input would be great!!
In France there is always Paris - the big things like Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Versailles. But a couple of great additions are the catacombs and seeing Montmartre, along with a late-night cruise of the Seine.
Elsewhere in France, consider travelling to Normandy to see the D-day beaches and museums, or even out to see the gorgeous Mont-Saint-Michel.
In Germany, Berlin has a lot to see, but also consider taking a cruise on the Rhine (K-D Lines at http://www.k-d.com/englisch/index.html are included in a rail pass if you will be travelling with one). The Black Forest is very nice to see, including the sleepy yet picturesque town of Triberg, which is a great place to shop for cuckoo clocks if you are looking for one. Of course I would also recommend that you see Munich and take in their excellent beer halls, along with taking a day-trip out to see the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
In Italy, you can do the riviera on the cheap if you travel to the Cinque Terre, which are five towns on the north-west coast. The towns run from Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare and you can find great, inexpensive accommodations from Mar-Mar in Riomaggiore at http://www.5terre-marmar.com/
Of course, Venice, Rome, and Florence are all spectacular and worth the visit, if you have time.
If you are trying to do things a bit more on a budget, remember that the big cities (especially Rome, Venice, Paris, and Berlin) will be the most expensive as they are the most sought-after tourist destinations. In those cities, start looking early for hostels to stay at as the ones that offer you a great stay for the least amount of money will book up quickly. Take a look at a good website like http://www.hostels.com and read the reviews of fellow travellers.
