England-about 10 days, Italy- about 10 days, and France- about 10 days (may change depending on whether we'd rather stay in one country longer). Taking a car trip to Tuscany in April, I have all the guide books, but there is so much information on the area its tough to plan the trip. I have no set schedule, will have 1-2 weeks to spend in the area. Any ideas?
You should spend at least 3 or 4 days in Florence. It is wonderful and it is also called "italy's capital of art". There are the Duomo, the Galleria Degli Uffizi and other wonderful places in the city centre. I would spent more than 4 days. You could also visit Siena (70 km from Florence). Here you can visit the Duomo, Piazza del Campo, discover its traditions (very very suggestive!) and visit some museums. In Pisa (100 km from Florence) you can visit the famous Tower of Pisa and the church located near it. There are also wonderful places in the hills. In San Galgano, for example, you can visit the ancient abbey and visit the sword in the rock. In San Gimignano, other Fabulous town, you can walk around the city visiting the suggestive city centre and the sixteen medieval towers of the city. Near San Gimignani there is Volterra, other wonderful place. If you have time, you can go to Piombino, take a ferry and visit the Isola d'Elba. There are fantastic landscapes and attractions. Bye!

NOT TOO EXPENSIVE MAX.1 1/2 TO 2 HOURS DRIVE FROM ST MALO. NICE CLEAN LOOS AND SHOWERS!! IF ANYONE COMES UP WITH ANYTHING PLEASE PROVIDE A LINK. I suggest you join either (or both) of the Caravan Club or the Camping and Caravanning Club. One of the services they provide is organising and booking sites all over Europe, including the ferry crossings, insurance etc. I have just returned from a camping (tent) holiday arranged for me by the C & C Club in south west Brittany. Incidentally, I think the site I went to would be a possibility for you - altho' it does have nearly 500 pitches. (Look at the website for Camping du Letty at Benodet). It is on the edge of a good safe beach, about a mile from Benodet town, which is a lovely little place. Previously we have used Camping Poulquer also at Benodet. This is a smaller site, very close to Benodet town and very pleasant with fewer pitches (booked thro' the Caravan Club.) The north coast of Brittany is not particularly interesting but go into Finisterre and there's more to see and to do. Campsites there include: Ker-Ys at Pentrez Plage - lovely situation, edge of sea, 240 pitches. Raguenes Plage, near Pont Aven, sea - 300 yards - 320 pitches. There are good sites at Beg-meil, Fouesnant, Carnac, etc. If you really want to stay in North Brittany you could try Bel Event at St Pere (115 pitches and only 8 miles from St Malo and the sea); L'Abri Cotier at Etables-sur-Mer (125 pitches, 1/2 mile from sea); Trelevern at Port L'Epine (- 160 pitches, close to beach and 90 miles from St Malo.) I have only mentioned sites of which I have knowledge but there are many, many more. Don't be put off by large sites. Du Letty has nearly 500 pitches but it is divided by high (2 metres) hedges into little areas each taking 4 to 6 units. We (my wife and I) are both pensioners but we found the place excellent with first class facilities. If you book an inclusive holiday via one of the two clubs you will know that the site you choose will have excellent facilities, clean loos, etc. I have camped in Brittany many times since my first visit in 1963 and if I can give you any further info which could be of use please post another question.

You can get tickets to the Vienna Philharmonic at the Golden Hall or the opera at the neo renaissance Staatsoper. Visit the wine taverns or if your feel a bit like partying you can go to mega club Flex where some of Vienna's top DJ's preform. Now hostels they are plentiful here and each are of own uniqueness. You'll never have bad service and there are always kinds of transportation open to you.

My favorite is Frommers because they're always right about the restaurants and places to stay. The sightseeing guides are good and so are the recommendations for hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Lonely Planet is excellent also, for the same reasons, and they excel at the lesser-visited places too. They also feature a lot more less-expensive accomodation and are geared towards younger travellers. Bring them both, and have a fantastic trip! Be sure to visit local tourist info centers too. they usually have great maps and suggested walking tours in their publications.

I really enjoyed the Boboli Gardens in Florence near the Ponte Vecchio bridge (worth seeing too) We got the red topless tour bus thing, it has 2 routes and 1 of them takes you to nearby village Fiesole which looks over Florence giving stunning views. Michelangelo's David is in the Accademia Gallery and is stunningly beautiful but there wasn't much else of note in there. We waited 90 mins to get in but if in Florence more than a day it's worth paying 3-4 more Euros for an advanced ticket which gives you a specific entry time and avoids crazy queueing action. In Rome highlights included The Trevi fountain, climbing the Copulla at St. Peter's Cathedral (enter on the right of the church) and the Roman Forums right beside the Colosseum. We got a Roma Pass from the hotel for €20 which gave you unlimited Metro and bus travel for 3 days and access to 2 tourist attractions which would have cost €10 each anyway so well worth it. It lets you skip any big queue too! Didn't make it as far as Naples sorry.

Are guided tours something to avoid? Should I just get a eurail pass have a lot of freedom to go where I feel like next?
Buy point-to-point train and bus tickets. Eurail passes are a waste of money in Eastern Europe.
I would also give guided tours a big berth, but that is me personally. I hate travelling with guided tours, they bore me out of my skull and frustrate me with their restrictions on what I can see and do. The only possible nice thing is that the guide gives you lectures. But since the quality of that commentary varies wildly I rather save my money and read things up on my own.
